I'm loving this demo, but I have run into a few bugs.

1) I saved my game after getting a key. When I loaded my game, I no longer had the key, and could not re-open the chest to get the key. Therefore, I cannot open the door, and it seems I've reached a dead end.

2) For some reason, after loading the game, I cannot have more than one creature at a time, regardless of points. I just ended up feeding my canvulf all the food, and watched him run around beasting things.

3) Like other people, I ran into the "tried to change controls on the keyboard while having a controller selected and getting stuck" bug.

Non-bug issues:

1) It is really difficult sometimes to feed your pets. It would be nice if the whistle could attract their attention to food you've placed. Though, getting them to sit still for a moment does make it easier to throw food at them.

2) It would be nice to go back to the inventory from the bestiary/pocket garden without needing to close and reopen.

3) Would be nice to be able to access controls/etc. in game.

4) Would be nice to be able to view/track character stats.

Aside from those bugs, I'm really enjoying this game. I missed the Kickstarter, but I'd be happy to back any post-Kickstarter gig there might be :)

The Key issue should be fixed, but unfortunately you will have to start a new game. Not sure about the bug for not being able to have more than one creature. The title screen rebind control issue should be fixed.

All of the non-bug issues will be improved in future updates.

Thanks for playing Creature Keeper! There will be an alpha period launching soonish where you can support development. I'll be sure to put out an update when that goes live.

Awesome! That's good to hear.

As far as the one creature bug: I had my wolf, which I had boosted significantly with food. I left other slots open for taming, and had several critters in reserve. I saved, quit the game, and later returned. When I realized I had no more new tameables I could access, I tried to round out my party. When I did that, the game gave me the message saying I didn't have enough creature points. I could swap out other critters for my wolf, but if I tried to add more than one critter, regardless of what it was, I just got the message saying I didn't have enough points.

It seems like some of the creature data got corrupted. The best thing I can do for now is to make sure that the data can't be corrupted in the first place

(1 edit)

can you please add a warning sign before starting a new game I ended up starting a new game and deleting all my progress just because of one wrong button.good game otherwise

There shouldn't be a problem there because the only way you can save is by using the save crystal. Starting a new game does not overwrite or delete your save

wait what

I can write some experience while playing the game and feedback :)

1) At the start I clicked to controls settings and while at controller (default selected) I clicked on UP and tried to rewrite it on keyboard, then I realised there was an ICON option for KEYBOARD and I am in CONTROLLER selection and I have to Alt+F4 becouse I cant revert the  attempt to change controller setting for UP (arrow). ESCneither any other reasonable key-stroke is working to revert the change prosedure. Clicking on default by mouse is not doing anything too -I am stil stuck in selection of new input :D Funny bug - maybe you already resolved it but it is in this version :D I love your work and as starting dev that vants to make a living and start family thanks to indie gamedev with my friend, I look forward to play similar games made by 1-2 people and see, that ists definitelly possible to do.

The issue with not being able to exit rebinding keys should be fixed now. Thanks for playing Creature Keeper! I am glad that you enjoyed the game, and you should look forward to Creature Keeper's future!

Love this demo so much! Is there anyway to back the kickstarter anymore or get a copy at this point?

EDIT: By get a copy I mean pay for one now and wait for the release.

(+1)

I'm still working out the details, but if things work out, there will be a Post-Kickstarter option to support Creature Keeper. I'll make sure to write an update when it goes live

Just like moonlighter but better!!

I love this game, I can hardly wait to see more. There are some things I'd like to see in the future, like an armor tab, more plot to tell us why we're wandering about befriending creatures. Also, I'd love to see us being able TO befriend ALL creatures. Like, instead of being able to befriend some but not all. I get some of the creatures may be very powerful, but at least put in a food that's rare to make it a rare catch. More towns would be nice, and maybe some signs to explain new aspects like "You can climb up ledges this way". The Cactis also upset me, like it wouldn't let me by at points. I had to repeatedly try different angles to get around them. Give us a way to damage the cactis  like we can damage rocks. Let it drop "Spines" or something that can be used for crafting. The bigger the Cactis, the more reward for destroying it.

Another thing I noticed, was that the creatures you've ALREADY tamed will sometimes stray off or halt in their movement and won't follow you. I tried feeding them at times like these, but they still acted out. If you want to keep it where we keep having to remind the tame creatures why they're tamed, perhaps give a punishment and Reward system to help let us TRAIN the creatures so they stick close by no matter what.

Hey, thanks for playing Creature Keeper!
All of your concerns will be addressed in the future! The demo was a very basic sandbox version of the game focusing on showing off the mechanics. Once the mechanics are fleshed out and solidified, the story will tie everything together

i download game

i play game

i like game

thank u for game

Thanks for playing!

I Found What I'm Gonna Guess Is A Bug. If You Exit A Area And Re-Enter It Resets The Area Like You've Never Been There. This Allows You To Infinitely Farm Bags Of Blood Oranges In The Beginning Of The Game.

That's not a glitch or a bug, that's how old school games were.

(+1)

I love the game so far! only played about an hour so far, just exploring every crack haha. It's beautifully designed with timing implemented in the mechanics. I just want to know a couple of things:
How do you equip armor without using an item slot? Is there an "armor" tab that I don't know about yet?
Are there any other towns/villages in the game, other than the one at the start? Can I expect to meet new characters and find a plot, or do I just train better monsters to be able to get further away from the starting village?

(+1)

I have one last comment lol. I don't think the complexity should decrease at all. having the option of 3 weapons at a time is awesome. timing auto attacks for maximum speed is awesome. having to craft everything you want is awesome. If anything, the complexity could slightly increase to make button combos do special attacks: for example, a lunge from the foil followed by a slam from the axe, with the correct timing ofc. Sorry for the essay, I love this game so much I just want the best for it can you blame me?!

(+1)

Just actually today, I was thinking about something similar to your weapon combo system. There may be hope for that mechanic in the future!

Thanks for playing Creature Keeper! There isn't an armor tab or anything and the current armor system will be changed in the future. There is only one village in the demo, and the plot will be introduced later.

That's EXACTLY what I thought, also why can't you befriend ALL the monsters? I get that you have to kill the same species of monster multiple times to learn more and more about the creature. But they also don't give new descriptions, just small icons. I WANT to befriend the Zombie crawler, or the weird wizard that zaps you. That's the beauty of Pokemon was that you could catch every creature, not just "some".

Having played the demo for a while, I'd like to give my thoughts on it:

The text can be incredibly difficult to read, particularly in the bestiary.
Please consider accessibility issues such as that.
It is absolutely worth sacrificing the '8-bit style' for functionality and clarity.

It also seems as though one must have weapons/armour in the gear wheel to equip them, despite that being where one would want to have useable items.
A dedicated 'equipment' page and/or wheel would be much appreciated, and a tremendous Quality of Life improvement.

Otherwise, the core gameplay definitely appeals.
Collecting and raising creatures mixed with some classic RPG mechanics is a great mix. Just needs that extra care and polishing up in terms of UX/UI.

(+1)

Yes, I agree on all counts! Text will be improved over time.
The  armor system only works the way it does because it was the fastest way to get equipment implemented in time for the demo.

(-1)

I cant even play it doesn't work for computer. Aw dang it. I've been eyeing this for a while too D:

What OS are you running the game on?

(-1)

Windows

(-1)

Finally got the game to work. occasionally ill press buttons and it'll lag and began moving on its own and not letting me do stuff.

(+5)

I've played only a bit but I like what I see. Also, for my fellow Linux users having a hard time getting the game to run, you can run the game through the itch.io app.

(-7)

do u lant to help me for mi game

You know its going to be a good game when you really want to keep playing it. Unfortunately there were so many bugs that kept me from doing it :(  Trying to change the controls locked me out of doing anything.  Opening the materials window caused some strange bugs and prevented me from doing anything else in the inventory window.  Going into the inn was permanent?  I'll be keeping an eye out for a stable release ;) Looks promising.

Which version was this? For the keybind bug, I imagine that you were trying to assign keyboard controls, while the controller option was selected, or vice versa. I'll have to double check the material viewer inputs. I can see where some parts would cause some soft locks. The strange inn bug is making me think it's not a PC build, cause I've never had that bug, ever. Thanks for bringing these bugs up!

Here is the way to play this game on linux (at least it worked for my 64 bit pc)

1. Download the game

2. Extract and copy the path of the 'package.nw' file

3. Download NWJS from https://nwjs.io/, to play the game, NORMAL version is enough.

4. Extract the NWJS file, get the path of 'nw' file

5. To run the game, just use 'nw' to open 'package.nw' file:

In terminal, run this command: path-to-nw/nw path-to-package/package.nw

In my case, it is:

/home/taijiwoo/nwjs-v0.42.1-linux-x64/nw /home/taijiwoo/App/linux64/package.nw

And it's done!! :D

(+3)

It also runs fine if you run it through the itch.io app.

(+2)

xbox controller support?

(+2)

yes

kool thx

(+1)

Great! I hope the Nintendo Switch version is also available.  Is it possible?  I am also curious about Korean language support.

(+1)

For now, I can't make any promises for a Switch release. Development is going to be 17 months and a lot can change during that time. Even with regards to Korean language support, there's a lot of things to do and not a lot of time to do everything

(+1)

thanks for your reply :) i will wait your games. Good life.

if I back the game to receive beta access when would this be available as this game looks amazing! Keep up the good work!

Alpha access is just a continuation of the current demo updates, but exclusive to alpha/beta tier and up backers. So far, during the KS, I've released 3 demos. I'm thinking the pacing for alpha will be every two weeks and I will try to include more content with each update for feedback and to make adjustments in direction

This was a fantastic experience. I'm in love with monster collecting games in general, but this does some neat things in particular. Leveling up your character by getting more information about monsters (and getting art as a reward), is a super fulfilling system. The tetris farming mechanic is a neat way to get new food/equipment. All in all the game was very unique and interesting, definitely play this if you're into Monster collecting games. (The music is great as well.) Props to the developer!

(+1)

Thanks for checking out Creature Keeper and making a video about it! I'm very proud of the mechanics and I enjoy seeing people get excited for the Creatures, Bestiary,  and Pocket Garden!

You should be proud! Thanks for making such a great experience.

is this a pokemon fan game???

No

(+1)

on MacOS (Catalina) I get "Can't open package", then nothing. no window etc

There may be some issues with Catalina specifically. There is not much I can do right now, but something might turn up in the future

Play on Mac.

01. Download Mac versionCreatureKeeperKSDemo3_Mac_64-bit.zip
02. Rightclick file "CreatureKeeperKSDemo3_Mac_64-bit.zip" and open with "The Unarchiver.app"
- - Don't have "The Unarchiver.app" to to the app store and get it.
- - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/the-unarchiver/id425424353?mt=12
03. It will create a new file named "nwjs.app" or "creaturekeeper-1.app"
04. RightClick on the new file it created and click Open
05. You will get "“nwjs.app” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified."
06. Click Cancel
06. RightClick on the new file it created and click Open again
07. You will get "macOS cannot verify the developer of “nwjs.app”. Are you sure you want to open it?"
08. Click Open
09. You might get "Do you want the application “creaturekeeper.app” to accept incoming network connections?"
10. Click Allow
11. You should now see that game. I hope this helps.

* * This is not the only way to get the game working, but it is how I got it working.
* * If I did it any other way I got "The application “creaturekeeper 2.app” can’t be opened."

brilliant:) it works, but when the first text box about having fun (with the controls shown), it then wont allow any input from trackpad or keyboard. keep pressing the trackpad and A/ENTER and it just stys the same - music is playing.

(3 edits)

Hello, see if this helps.

01. Start Game
02. Click Options
03. Click the keyboard icon
04. Click save
05. Hit Esc on your keyboard
06. Click Load or New Game

tried downloading using both PC links and both came back with a 'Failed - Forbidden' error

I haven't done anything to the downloads, so hopefully whatever problem you were having has cleared up by now

This was fun to play, Although I just got a slime and bat near the start and never felt like switching them out, cause it would be a head ache to run all the way back. might be something to consider, but if it was more convenent to manage my monster party I would have engaged with that system more.

Overall a great experiance

It should have been more clear, but there's a button dedicated to exactly what you wanted, creature management. It's select on the controller or tab on the keyboard.

Rule Number 1: talk to everyone and read every sign haha

Oh this is great! I would totally pay for a full version.

When you die, you can press z and then continue walking until the screen turns black.

cant wait for this to be in final version

love the game and would totally pay good money for a final version. was wondering how i could replace my pets, as i couldent find that anywhere. thanks!

(+1)

If you press select (tab on keyboard), you'll be able to put creatures in your reserves. That will free up some space to befriend other creatures

thanks

Love the concept.

I am having trouble with actually playing. I couldn't get either version to launch on my Linux computer.

I then attempted on windows. I was able to launch, but am having trouble with gameplay.

The down and left arrows aren't responding, so I have to roll to get out of corners.

Any thoughts on either issue?

Hello, I'll admit I'm not familiar with how Linux works in general, so I don't have any answers for you about that.

This is my first time hearing about that kind of keyboard bug, and I can only say try out a controller for now. I just recently added controller support and the game can switch between Keyboard/Controller support at will, which might have caused some things to bug out.

Another thing you can do is try loading the default keybinds and saving them, maybe somehow, something got messed up.

If you do have controllers but still prefer the keyboard, try unplugging the controller. Maybe the game's deadzones might be messed up, causing strange inputs

I love the game, but there's a glitch I've encountered where when I walk near the door of the tavern/shop/house type thing near the dog, the screen goes black and I have to close and restart the whole thing. Other than this, the game is great.

That's very strange, because that should be an actual area that you can go to

I can't play the game because the controls are automatically set for a controller and I'm on a laptop :(( the game looks great though

if you press a key on the keyboard it should switch to keyboard mode!

Deleted 5 years ago

Played the demo today and I loved it!! Its so much fun and also beautiful to look at!! I wish you all the best with Kickstarter and I will definitely be excited for the full game!

I'm sure you are already working on this but will you add controller support or make it somewhat simpler to move around/move stuff? As much fun as I had sometimes I had trouble with all the keyboard buttons:P

lol, having just replied to the post above, there is controller support!
You just have to press a button on the controller to activate it.
It's not very clear, but I'll clear that up in the next build!

Ah okay! I will play around with it:)) I use a ps4 controller so I hope it works, thank you!!

This project is awesome !
keep up the good work bud!

(+1)

Thanks! I can't say this enough, but I'm excited to work with the community to make Creature Keeper a really great game!

Yo i wish i couldve seen this game sooner! This is awesome and i love the art style. I'm definitely gonna be keeping an eye on this =D

Thanks for checking out Creature Keeper! I'm excited to have the game out there and ready for feedback

(1 edit)

ARPG with monster pets? Cut right to my heart why don't you? :3

I played a bit of the demo and so far it is a lot of fun! The controls get me a bit. A lot of times I'll roll or open the menu when I want to attack, and I rarely use anything except my C weapon because the others seem to far away to be worth the trouble. Is there controller support implemented or planned? Because I think being able to map my own controls to a controller will alleviate a lot of that.

Additionally I had a lot of trouble with feeding my monsters. For some reason taking things out of my ring inventory is really inconsistent, and I have to do the button input several times before it works (hold x, hold direction, hold z, release x). Additionally my Nokobo and Canvulf run around so erratically that once I actually have the food, it's difficult to feed it to them, and even more difficult to feed a particular one. The Canvulf is especially difficult, because its food hitbox is really small, and presumably only on the side of its body where its head is. So when it's running around me (typically up and down) I have no chance of hitting it. I've taken to sending all of my other creatures back to the reserve, petting my Canvulf to get it to stay still, then chucking the food at its face (which still goes right past it most of the time). Please make it easier to feed dog. T_T

Another nice QOL change would be sound effects for equipping things, and some sort of indication of what is currently in your armor or accessory slots. I wasn't sure if removing my armor from my ring menu would keep it equipped, didn't realize that there was an armor slot separate from the accessory slots, and equipped my gloves a bunch of different times before I realized it had worked (because the indicator is pretty small).

Some glitches I found:

- Creatures that aren't in the top/first slot won't always follow you. The stronger creatures seemed ok but the bats and beps liked to wander more.

- Sometimes a creature that isn't in the top slot will seem to disappear? They'll come back if you change screens once or twice but it can be disconcerting.

-Hitting a tree with an axe keeps you from cutting grass in the same swing. Not sure if this is intended but it confused me at first.

-EDIT: There's also this graphical glitch on the bestiary if you move the cursor around. I found it on the bat page I think: https://imgur.com/a/29kCzV9

Anyway, I'm really excited to see where this game goes! I'll have to see if I can swing the funds to back the kickstarter, but if not I'll still keep an eye out for this project. Local co-op would make this a MUST for me and my SO, even if it's just letting a buddy control one of the creature friends. Good luck with the Kickstarter and development!

(+1)

Thanks for checking out Creature Keeper! There is controller support in the current version of the demo. It is a little confusing to activate it though, all you have to do is just use it and the game should automatically switch to controller inputs.

Also in the same build, if you take out some food, it should make all the creatures near you stop moving for a few seconds, but that's only when you take food out from your item ring. It's something I'll definitely improve on over time!

Thanks for pointing out the sfx on assigning accessories! I just added them in Demo1, and have probably missed some feedback ques.

The pathfinding system for the creatures still has a ways to go. They do move very erratically, and I need to fix it so that they are more chill outside of battle

Seriously one of the MOST addicting games I have EVER played. I just need the finished product to come out so I can play it forever.

(+1)

Thanks for making a vid! It's very good at showing off all of the current features of the game!

this game is awesome i cant wait to see more of it also while playing i found a bit of an exploit if you take a pet out of your team and then put it back in it get healed to full health

besides that i love this game

(+1)

Thanks for checking out Creature Keeper!
I'll eventually fix that exploit, maybe in Demo 3

this is an awesome game! taming animals and taking care of them, haveing to grow your own food! I'm not even done with the game yet and i give it my full support Awesome job!

Thanks for checking out Creature Keeper!
Also that thumbnail is excellent

very nicely done!
but at some point my creatures stop following me. I think I'm not a good pet owner lmao.

The pathfinding can be a bit wonky sometimes! It will improve over time.

Thanks for playing Creature Keeper!

Just started played this a few minutes ago and man, i've been really enjoying it. The art style is great and the animations are so smooth, i love it so much.

So far, I don't have any complaints other from the controls or bugs other people have stated below.

Keep up the great work, and good luck on your funding! I can't wait to be able to play this on Switch someday!

Thanks for checking out Creature Keeper!
A lot of the major bugs will be fixed in the next update which will also include a lot of quality of life and clarification improvements, so keep your eyes out for that

(1 edit)

Hi, just found this game and am enjoying it so far, with a few bugs ofc, as mentioned from others below.

There is something that's rly bugging me (except the keybinds, since i'm using a german keyboard my z is where the english y is, so i had to change to english keyboard, because my finger started to hurt from the stretch)

Anyway, i hope you have this on your roadmap or thought about it, but the feeding is just too op right now. There has to be a limit per "day" or level, or of some other kind. because i can just go, grind some materials and then feed my pet with "infinite" foods. that way my lvl 1 bat has almost reached 200hp in just 20 minutes. Also, is leveling implemented yet? Doesn't seem like it.

Another bug i have, and haven'T seen below, but also didn'T read all of the comments, is that my bestiary is stuck. I was able to use some points on my first pet, and after that I wasn't able to move the quill / curser in menu. Also, shouldn't it be beastiary, because they are beasts, not best like "I'm the best".

Anyway, gonna continue playing now.

PS: Bestiary is unstuck now! Woop woop

Nice magical stones in the desert tileset! And cool mage cats.

There should be key rebinding in the next build.
The level indicator is a placeholder and there will not be a leveling system in the next build released (it has not been planned out).
I've intentionally left the feeding overpowered, since it's just fun to see how overpowered creatures can get for a short demo.
Bestiary is the correct spelling.
Menus should have more button prompts in the next build, so that less people get stuck.
